Creating a fanny pack, also known as a waist bag, can be a fun and practical sewing project. Below is a simple pattern to help you make a basic fanny pack. You can customize the size, fabric, and features based on your preferences.
Materials:
- Fabric (main fabric for the body and lining fabric)
- Interfacing (to add structure)
- Zipper (around 8-10 inches)
- Buckle and webbing for the belt
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
Instructions:
Step 1: Cut the Fabric:
- Cut two rectangles from the main fabric for the body of the fanny pack. These will be the front and back panels. You can customize the size based on your preference, but a common size is around 10 inches by 5 inches.
- Cut two rectangles from the lining fabric using the same dimensions.
- Cut two rectangles from interfacing, slightly smaller than the fabric pieces.
Step 2: Prepare the Belt:
- Cut a piece of webbing for the belt. The length will depend on your waist size, allowing for some extra length for adjustment. Attach a buckle to one end of the webbing.
Step 3: Attach the Belt:
- Place the webbing on one of the main fabric pieces, aligning the buckle end with the top edge of the fabric. Ensure that the webbing is centered.
- Pin the webbing in place and stitch across the webbing to secure it to the fabric.
Step 4: Attach the Zipper:
- Place the zipper face-down on the right side of one main fabric piece, aligning the top edge.
- Place one lining piece on top, aligning the top edge with the zipper and pin in place.
- Stitch along the top edge, attaching the zipper to the fabric.
- Repeat the process for the other side of the zipper, attaching the remaining main fabric and lining pieces.
Step 5: Assemble the Fanny Pack:
- Open the zipper halfway.
- Place the main fabric pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together.
- Pin around the edges, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the lining for turning.
- Stitch around the edges, reinforcing the stitching at the beginning and end.
- Clip the corners and turn the fanny pack right side out through the opening in the lining.
- Hand-stitch or machine-stitch the opening in the lining closed.
Step 6: Finishing:
- Press the fanny pack to give it a neat appearance.
- Optionally, you can topstitch around the edges for added durability and a finished look.
Feel free to add pockets, embellishments, or adjust the dimensions based on your preferences. This is a basic pattern that you can customize to suit your style and needs.
